Dear Applicant,
We are pleased that you are considering Howard University Hospital (HUH) for your postgraduate training. HUH is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). As you have been invited to interview with us, we wish to take this time to briefly outline the eligibility requirements and benefits of postgraduate training at HUH.
Resident Eligibility
In order to be eligible for enrollment in the HUH postgraduate training program, you must be a graduate of one of the following institutions:
- Medical School in the United States or Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME)
- College of Osteopathic Medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA)
- Medical School outside the United States and Canada, and possess one of the following qualifications
- a) Current valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, or
- b) Full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. licensing jurisdiction, or
- c) Completion of a Fifth Pathway Program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school.
Prior to beginning your residency, verification of your graduation will be obtained from the school where you matriculated. In addition, you must pass a background check, a drug screen and USMLE Step I and Step II inclusive of the Clinical Skills exam. USMLE Step III must be passed within 18 months of starting the program. Finally, you are required to have a physical examination coordinated through the HUH Employee Health Unit. If applicable, you must hold a valid visa and current ECFMG certificate. You are also required to have a social security number prior to beginning employment.

Additional benefits include the following:
Reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a DC medical license if and when required to continue training (after five (5) years or on completion of a postgraduate clinical training program or whichever comes first). Please note that regardless of your year of training, you must obtain a license to practice medicine in the District of Columbia prior to beginning residency if you have a medical license in another state
Reimbursement for approved expenses incurred in connection with oral or poster presentation at local, national or international meetings, and
Financial support for specialty board review course during final year of training up to $1000
